Dr. Smyser is an Adjunct Professor at the Center for German and European Studies at Georgetown University, teaching courses on "Diplomacy and Statecraft" in the spring term and on "The Political Economy of European Integration" in the fall term.  Dr. Smyser was a U.S. Foreign Service Officer, serving in Asia, Africa and Europe, including  1960-1964 in Berlin during the crisis over the Berlin Wall. He was then special assistant to General Lucius Clay when the General was in Berlin as President Kennedy's Personal Representative.   Dr. Smyser later also served on Dr. Henry Kissinger's staff in the White House, accompanying Dr. Kissinger on the secret mission to Beijing in 1971. He then joined the United Nations for five years during the 1980s as Assistant Secretary General.   Since then, Dr. Smyser has concentrated on teaching, also writing books on German affairs and on humanitarian issues.
